Loggerhead sea turtle – Cargonets

Human activity in the Atlantic Ocean is enormous and has a big impact on marine wildlife in general. This example is about a Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) I rescued in the Atlantic Ocean. This Loggerhead was about 10 years old, weigh about 20 KG and had a thick 20 meters long cargo-driftnet entangled around it’s body. You can see on the main menu of Planet ECOcean conservation project in what kind of situation I discovered this Loggerhead sea turtle. It was a struggle for me, and for the Loggerhead sea turtle, to get the 20 meter long cargonet of it’s body.

Lucky enough there was just one small injury on it’s body so there was no period of rehabilitation necessary for this sea turtle so I had set it free at once. On the photo you see the relief of the Loggerhead when I cutted the net. Conclusion is driftnets are an enormous problem in all the Oceans and not just the Atlantic Ocean. Every day lots of animals get trapped in these driftnets. If these animals are not rescued in time, by qualified people, they will die a slowly death for sure. So please, when you see driftnets in the Ocean, think about what harm they can do to marine wildlife in general and get these driftnets out of the Oceans by yourself.
