Sperm whale Photo-ID

Desertinho Atlantic Whale observations has been participating in various international Sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) whale photo-ID projects since 2012. I am proud to share our data, and information, with several whale researchers near the Atlantic Ocean.

In recent years I have been able to make a large number of sperm whale “Photo-ID” matches and each specific sperm whale sighting provides us with a lot of valuable information for the investigation of sperm whale migration routes, age, behavior and their feeding pattern.

The photos you see on this page are all unique sperm whales. In recent years I have been able to identify more than 150 sperm whales by their fluke. The largest group consists of female sperm whales that are resident in the areas around the equator. It is important to get the fluke in the picture so that you can recognize the specific characteristics. When a sperm whale dives they are getting ready to dive into the depths of the Atlantic Ocean in search of Giant squid.
