Photo cameras and lenses

Photo cameras and lenses: In addition to a good camera, and a bright lens (2.8), it is recommended to use GPS. For me personally GPS is really an important tool for whale migration research that I do. A 2nd important accessory is the Polarizing filter on your lens and that you will focus it before departure. A Polarizing filter is a “must have” if you want to make clear pictures of a whale. You can find a polarizing filter too expensive, and too complicated, then you can consider using a UV filter. With this kind of filter you will not achieve the result like the polarizing filter but is will help a bit. Also very important is to make sure you have a waterproof bag, which can open and close easily, for your camera and your peripherals. As soon as a whale is around it is important that you have you’re camera dry and quickly operational. For the use of a professional DSLR there are a lot of acts you have to do: Bag open, protective cap off the lens, lens hood on it, polarizer focus, etc. At least there is a minimum of 10 actions that you need to do to get your camera operational and the same actions will take place when the boat departs. This will happen in all kind of weather conditions together with waves. Finally, make sure you always have handkerchiefs with you in case you have to absorb water of the camera or lens, when it became wet. Go never rub! Salt can easily damage your camera and lens.

Dress code: Make sure you’re dressed warm although it is, on departure, pleasant in a T-shirt and shorts. DRY FIT clothing, combined with thermal (under)wear, is the best clothing to wear. The weather on the Atlantic Ocean can be very variable so be prepared for the Atlantic weather conditions.

General preparation: When you made up youre choice about which organisation you want to go out with for whale watching observations it is important that you, before departure, take part to their general information meeting. During their breefing they will give you important information about what you can expect during the whale observation excursion. It is important you follow up their advices but always use you’re own common sense. For me personally it always had been an important added value that you win, before departure, information by the local people about: The actual weather conditions, the Atlantic Ocean in general, and the organization where you want to join the trip with. Their information was always proved valuable for me. In summary: The locals are therefore really important.

Finally, and important before boarding, is to make sure you have visited the toilet (WC) and you have eaten enough. After the information breefing you will board and than I take as an example the RIB. In a RIB you generally have little room to move and this kind of boat is highly susceptible to waves. So, make sure you get the correct position in a RIB. This advice is important in terms of making the best photos but also for youre physicall condition in general. Whale observation rules, in a RIB, are as follows: If there is a whale visible on the left side the people on the right side may stand and vice versa. Please confirm youre self to this rule!
