Toothed whales

Toothed whales (Odontoceti) are whales, as the name already mentions, that has teeth. Toothed whales are the largest family of the Cetacea. The smallest toothed whale is the porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) and the biggest species is the sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus). The male sperm whale is much bigger, and more shy, than a female sperm whale. More than 20 meters of lenght, and more than 40 tons of weigh, is very common for a male sperm whale when they are adult. The male sperm whales are, like the baleen whales, the “long distance travellers” in the Oceans as well. This is in contrast to female sperm whales. Toothed whales mainly feed on fish and squid. It is quit easy to recognize a toothed whale on the water surface because they just have 1 blowhole. On the sub pages of the “Toothed whale area” you will find more toothed whale species that I observed in the Atlantic Ocean.
